Not Quite A Fairytale Ending.2"Sir, would you hand me the-" Hoffman was cut off as a series of gunshots from just beyond the airfield sounded. Bauer hurried to the side followed closely by Hoffman and Alek. Alek peered over the edge to see other airman firing back at a group of German soldiers, Dylan and Dr. Barlow running away as fast as they could without getting shot. Bauer leaned over more, trying to get a closer look.
"What are those Germans doing?" he said with a raised eyebrow. Hoffman shrugged as the two scrambled past the airfield gates and slumped against a wall.
"Didn't Volger go with them?" asked Alek. "Where is he?" Bauer stiffened.
"That's not good," he murmured. "Go ask. Hoffman and I have to stay here but we would come with you." Hoffman nodded furiously, looking nervous.
"Then come as soon as you can," Alek said and turned and disappeared down the hatch. He hurried through the ship, his guts churning as he strode through the innards of the great beastie. He found Dylan and Dr. Barlow on thei
Not Quite A Fairytale Ending.1Count Volger stood behind his desk, gazing out the windows. It was dark out now and he had candles that been deemed safe as there were no holes in the airbeast's membrane. He sighed boredly, continuing to reorganize his papers. The Darwinists had given them back shortly after they had left Istanbul but they still kept his sword under lock and key. There was a light knock on the door and Volger turned to see Dr. Nora Barlow slip in.
"Hello, Nora," he greeted. She walked over to him and peeked over his shoulder at the papers.
"Hello, Volger," she replied. "So they gave them back to you?"
"Yes," he answered. "It's been about time as well. They gave them back in all the wrong order, though."
"Well, that's seems boring," commented the woman bluntly.
"Very much so."
Dr. Barlow leaned against the side of the desk, just off to the side of him.
"What're these all for, anyway?" she asked gazing down at a stack.
"Newspapers, things regarding Alek, and the like," he sighed. "I have no idea what I'
Reaquaintances- part 2Yavari led them through the cool, white building slowly, looking at all the beasties. They were both disgusting and fascinating. They were mostly animal and bird beasties in this building. Bovril and Dr. Barlow's loris tittered away to the other beasties; mimicking their calls adeptly.
"May I see your loris, Dr. Barlow?" asked Axel excitedly. "I want to see our work closer." Dr. Barlow regarded him with a fond expression. She plucked the loris off her shoulder and held it out to Axel. The young man took it eagerly. The loris let out a low purr and climbed along his arm and laid atop his head. Dr. Yavari and Dr. Barlow laughed. Axel blushed sheepishly.
"He seems to like you, Dr. Cross," the lady Boffin said. Axel took the loris off his head.
"That's not what I meant, little buddy," he said. Alek and Deryn laughed a little.
"You helped to fabricate these beasties?" Alek asked scratching Bovril behind the ears. Axel nodded.
"Yeah," he said and looked at Dr. Barlow. "This little guy
Reaquaintances- part 1Alek had been relived when they finally started up the engines again. It had been all excitement between engineers, Darwinist and Clanker alike. They flew low over the Pacific Ocean, the air hot and dry. His shoulder joint was extremely pained from the hot metal touching his skin.
Dr. Barlow was up and moving around her cabin, still mad they wouldn't let her leave. Volger would sit there, watching her as she ranted with an amused expression. Conner was constantly trying to keep his son out of trouble, all the while trying to keep an eye on Sam. Yassen alternated between helping with Jacob and chattering with Volger. Both had been, surprised to see each other. They had been friend's for a long time, apparently, but had lost contact. Yassen was about ten years younger and had met Volger when he was seventeen and they'd hit it off right away. They had both refused to tell the Russian's former occupation.
Alek attempted to keep his metal shoulder mechanism from touching his ski
Perfect Mechaniks- part 11Deryn's eyes opened slowly. Her head hurt and so did her side. She lay there, remembering.
"Jason," he growled to herself. "that bum-rag." There was a soft snore next to her. She glanced over and saw Alek flopped against the desk, his head on her copy of 'Manual of Aeronautics'. She smirked at him.
She was in her room on the Leviathan and it was a dark gray, light only just starting to filter in through side of the window curtains. The blankets were slipping past her shoulders and she realized she wasn't wearing a shirt. Only gauze was wrapped around her chest and torso down to her hips. She blushed to herself and pulled the blankets up higher.
Alek mumbled something intelligible and he sat bolt upright. He blinked sleepily before rubbing his eyes with a weary sigh. He leaned back in the chair, running a hand through his hair. Deryn felt his eyes on her, sadness obvious in his green eyes. She turned her head to face him and blinked at him. He blinked back in surprise. They were s
Perfect Mechaniks- part 10Deryn wandered up and down the docks, staring out at the navy blue-black water. She wondered if Dr. Barlow was okay. She was barking tough lady so Deryn didn't worry much, but all the same, it always made her worried when one of her friend's were hurt. The sky was growing dark, the crimson sun low over the choppy water.
"Hey," called a voice from behind. "We weren't supposed to leave the airfield, you know."
"That's me," she said without turning. "the rule breaker and barking traitor." Alek stepped beside her and snorted a laugh. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"Give yourself a little credit. Your worse then that," he teased. Deryn laughed and punched him in the arm. Alek kissed her cheek and in return, Deryn kissed him on the mouth.
"You forgot to mention 'rebel'," she said. Alek smirked.
"I think all the people we mix ourselves up with are rebels." Deryn laughed.
"Very true, your princeliness," she grinned. They lapsed into silence, staring out over the water. Deryn fel
Perfect Mechaniks- part 9Deryn, Mr. Hirst, and several other crewman strode down the streets of San Francisco. Two crewman steered a cart being led by two docile lupine tigeresques. She took them to the mechaniks she had visited yesterday.
Deryn held the door open for Hirst and two other engineers then slipped in after them. The other men waited outside, glancing around furtively. The Americans kept staring at them as if they'd never seen a tigeresque or airmen before. She shook her head and stepped toward the counter.
"Here, sir," she said and handed the notebook to Hirst.
"Thank you, Miss Sharp," he replied. She nodded once then Jason and another man came from then back.
"What can I do for you today, sir?" asked the American man his eyes flickering over them.
"Do you have these items in stock?" asked Hirst holding out the notepad. The man took it and looked it over. He glanced at Deryn.
"Jason said he came around asking about these," he said gesturing to Deryn. She noticed the man had said 'he', not 'she.' S
Perfect Mechaniks- part 8It was midnight when Deryn heard the scream. She was on duty with Conner and Alek, doing rounds. They had seen Dr. Barlow walking and she was about to question her what she was doing up when it sounded. Conner had gotten this odd look on his pale face. He had immediately turned and run towards the direction of Sam's room. Glancing at the Boffin and Alek, she had followed him.
Conner skidded around the corners in a frenzy. Deryn and the other two had struggled to keep up with him. Conner tried he door to Sam's room desperately, only to find it locked. He screamed a curse as another cry of agony came from inside. He slammed against the door. It barely moved.
"Help me!" he shouted. Deryn lunged against the door. Alek joined them, pushing as hard as he could. Finally it gave. They stumbled into the room. Sam was writhing on the floor, a thick trail of blood from his bed and pooling around where he lay.
Conner knelt next to him and pushed down his shoulders.
"Hold he- him down!" he roa
